"The fundamental process of creative action is the same for most projects. It has to do with connecting to another person's undeveloped idea and desire, then finding a way to extract a path forward" - Melisse Herman

9:30am - 12:30pm PT
Come join the fun of painting/drawing outside with other artists. We will go to different locations in the East Bay each time we meet. I work individually with each student over the 3 hours and at the end of each session, we gather to look at the work and offer critique.I am always looking for new locations in the East Bay, so if you have a suggestion, send it my way. $140 for the set, $40 per class, contact Melisse to register.
Collage - Let's Break it Down
Alternate Tuesdays - Sept 10 & 24, Oct 8 & 22, Nov 5 & 19
7pm - 8pm or 8:30pm PT
Collage is a medium that offers you the opportunity to look at composition, shape, value and color in a way that is both limiting and expansive. Looking at the visual, material, and conceptually driven art of collage using just paper, glue, and scissors is the ultimate challenge for expanding your creative chops. Looking to other artists working in collage to see how they use the medium in visual, political, and material ways. Limiting your materials for conceptual gain - Grab your scissors and let's GO! $210, contact Melisse to register.
Monthly Critique
Once a month, Tuesday - Sept 17 | Oct 15 | Nov 12 | Dec 10
7pm - Open
Presenting your work for critique and critiquing other artists' work is another aspect of the creative process. Learning to offer thoughtful, useful critique is an important tool in developing as an artist. With these skills, you can discern where you need to improve and how to be objective when looking at not only your work but the work of other artists. Each month, an artist, idea, or movement will be presented for group discussion before work from the group is presented.$160 per person, contact Melisse to register.
Private Teaching
Melisse continues to work with students one on one in drawing, painting, and mixed media. If you are interested, contact Melisse for more information.

Basic Drawing and Beyond
Thursdays - Sept 12 - Oct 31
2pm - 4pm PT
Course description: This eight-week studio course focuses on the fundamentals of drawing while exploring a variety of media, techniques, and subject matter from still life and landscape to the figure. We will use traditional and experimental approaches to drawing; students will develop an understanding of line, value, gesture, proportion, and form. Through demonstration, practice, and class discussion, participants hone the verbal and analytical skills necessary to critically examine their and others’ work. This course is appropriate for beginners and those wishing to further develop their drawing skills.
The Subject is Painting
If you have some experience with painting, either oil or acrylic, you know there are stumbling blocks along the way. One of the best ways artists (Matisse, Morandi, and many others) have used to push their work forward is to create subject limits. In this class, we will work from still life and limit the objects so the focus can be the paint. Narrowing how you look at color, value, temperature, color schemes, etc., and most importantly subject, allows for intensive growth. Be willing to limit yourself now for a payoff in your painting and experience how limits can be a fun way to grow.
Wednesday and Thursday Atelier
